The outdoor academic procession has its antecedents in the medieval European university. The procession
is designed so that each graduate passes before each faculty member one final time before the conferring of
the degrees.
The modern academic gown evokes the medieval cappa clausa, a closed cloak typically worn by clerics; the
modern hood, worn over the shoulders and down the back, recalls a functioning medieval head garment.
In the late 19th century, the Intercollegiate Code was established for American universities through which
academic dress was standardized to convey the degree held, the field of study, and the university awarding
the degree. Accordingly, there are three shapes of gown: the bachelor’s gown is characterized by full,
pointed sleeves; the master’s gown is characterized by oblong sleeves, cut away in front to leave a streamer
of the sleeve behind; the doctor’s gown is faced with velvet, a likely echo of the clerical tippet, and features
bell sleeves adorned with velvet bars.
Academic hoods vary in size, shape, and color; they are lined with silk in the official color or colors of the
institution that granted the faculty member’s highest degree. The trim color of the velvet binding indicates
the discipline of the degree, commonly including: Philosophy, dark blue; Music, pink; Arts, Letters, and
Humanities, white; Education, light blue; Law, purple; Medicine, green; Library Science, lemon yellow;
Science, golden yellow; and Divinity, scarlet.
The gown is a symbol of the democracy of scholarship since it covers any clothing indicating rank or status.
The cap has its own traditions. The first right of a freed Roman slave was the privilege of wearing a cap, so
the academic cap is the sign of the freedom of scholarship. Mortarboards have long been worn but in recent
years soft caps or tams and other colorful headgear have gained favor.
An increasingly large number of universities in America have developed unique academic gowns; most of
these conform to the basic style of the Intercollegiate Code, although they replace traditional black with
school colors and are often ornamented with embroidered university seals or emblems. European academic
dress adds further diversity and color to the academic procession.
The audience will rise when the procession moves down the aisle.

I| RETIRING MEMBERS OF THE FACULTY
This commencement we honor the members of our faculty who are retiring:
Together these individuals have devoted 468 years of service to Oberlin, and we will miss them. It is an
honor and a pleasure to thank each one of them for the invaluable contributions they have made to the
academic community.
ALLEN CADWALLADER, Professor of Music Theory
Allen Cadwallader, an American music theorist noted for his writings on tonal analysis, joined the
faculty at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in 1988. He earned a BA from Western Maryland College
in 1973 and earned advanced degrees at Eastman School of Music in 1975 and 1983. His most influential
theoretical work centers on the teaching of Schenkerian analysis. Cadwallader is the editor of Essays from
the Fourth International Schenker Symposium, Volume 1 (2008) and Trends in Schenkerian Research
(1990). His articles have appeared in Music Theory Spectrum, Music Analysis, Intégral, Theory and
Practice, and Journal of Music Theory.
ROGER COPELAND, Professor of Theater and Dance
Roger Copeland joined the Oberlin faculty in 1975. He has published more than 100 articles about dance,
theater, and film in the New York Times, New Republic, Village Voice, Partisan Review, American Theatre,
Film Comment, Performing Arts Journal, and Dance Theatre Journal. His books include What is Dance’,
Merce Cunningham, and The Modernizing of Modern Dance. He has contributed chapters to many
books and anthologies, including Conversations with Susan Sontag and Perspectives on Photography,
among others. Copeland worked as a consultant for the National Endowment for the Arts, the Dance in
America television series on PBS, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival. His theater
criticism has been honored with both the Stagebill Award and the John Gassner Prize. He has received
fellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, and the National Endowment for the
Humanities. Copeland also wrote and directed The Unrecovered, a feature-length narrative film about the
aftermath of 9/11. He is currently completing a memoir about his final years at Oberlin.
Monique Dupuit, Professor of Piano
Monique Duphil made her Paris debut with orchestra at age 15, performing Felix Mendelssohn's G
minor piano concerto with the Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire. She was launched
on the world’s stages after prizes in four international competitions, including the Chopin Competition
in Warsaw, and has since performed in more than 50 countries throughout five continents. Duphil
entered the Conservatoire National Superieur de Paris at age 10. She won a premier prix in piano at 15
and graduated the following year with a grand prix in professional chamber music. Her spectacular
United States debut was performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, substituting on a few hours notice
for cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. She has been the featured soloist with numerous symphony orchestras
among them the Cleveland Orchestra, Orchestre Symphonique de Québec, Warsaw, Bern, Miinchner |
Symphoniker, Paris Orchestre Lamoureux, Caracas, Mexico, Lima, Rio de Janeiro, Montevideo, Seoul,
Tokyo Metropolitan, Sapporo, Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa, Taipei, Hong Kong, Singapore, New
Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Brisbane Symphony Orchestra, and all
Australian ABC orchestras. Her recordings can be heard on the Polydor, Telefunken (Japan), Marco Polo,
Avila, Naxos, and Electra (Canada) labels. Duphil served on the faculty of the Hong Kong Academy for the
Performing Arts before coming to Oberlin in 1992.
JOANNE ERwin, Professor of Music Education
Joanne Erwin earned a bachelor’s degree (magna cum laude) and a master’s degree in music education at
the University of Illinois. After teaching strings in public schools in Illinois and Texas, she went on to earn
a PhD in string pedagogy at the University of North Texas. While in Texas, she played in the Fort Worth
Symphony, conducted several youth orchestras, and founded a Suzuki program. Erwin came to Oberlin
in 1992, where she founded the Oberlin College String Preparatory Program, a laboratory for string
players studying pedagogy; she also played in Oberlin College Community Strings and conducted the
Northern Ohio Youth Orchestra. Through the Oberlin Community Music School, she maintained a cello
studio and coached chamber groups. She currently presents at music educator conferences and conducts
festival orchestras throughout the United States and abroad. She has coauthored several books, including
New Directions for Strings, A Scale in Time, and Prelude to Music Education. She also writes articles for
American String Teacher and Teaching Music.
GREG FULKERSON 71, Professor of Violin
Gregory Fulkerson is a double-degree graduate of Oberlin where he studied violin and math. He rose to
prominence as a major exponent of American contemporary music, taking first prize in the International
American Music Competition sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation and the Kennedy Center. As
a result of that victory, Fulkerson launched a very active performance schedule that included debuts in
New York, London, Paris, Rome, and Brussels. His early career included three years in the Cleveland
Orchestra, a year as founder of the Audubon Quartet, and two seasons as concertmaster of the Honolulu
Symphony. He has since performed more than 35 concerti with orchestra, including the world premieres of
the John Becker violin concerto with the Chattanooga Symphony, the Roy Harris violin concerto with the
North Carolina Symphony, and the Richard Wernick violin concerto with Riccardo Muti conducting the
Philadelphia Orchestra. He performed the title role in the 1992 revival of the Philip Glass opera, Einstein
on the Beach, for a total of 48 performances on four continents, and later recorded the work for Nonesuch.
Fulkerson’s other acclaimed recordings include the Bridge label releases of J.S. Bach: The Sonatas and
Partitas for Unaccompanied Violin, which made The New Yorker's 2000 “Disks of Distinction.” Charles
Ives—The Sonatas for Violin and Piano with Oberlin Professor of Piano Robert Shannon, which has
become the standard version of those works; and Stephen Jaffe Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, which
won the 2006 Koussevitzky Award. Fulkerson has been professor of violin at the Oberlin Conservatory
since 1982. His students inhabit every level of musical life in America, including professional quartets, new
music groups, teachers, crossover artists, and concertmasters, principal players, and section players in most
American orchestras.

SUZANNE Gay, Professor of East Asian Studies and History
Suzanne Gay earned a BA at the University of Washington in 1973 and an MA and PhD in Japanese
history at Yale University in 1977 and 1982, respectively. She has conducted research at Kyoto and Osaka
universities, and her research interests include the social and economic history of medieval Japan, with
a particular emphasis on the role of commoners in history. Her writings focus mainly on the role of
merchants and merchant guilds in medieval Japanese commerce. Gay came to Oberlin in 1986, teaching
courses on Japanese language, culture, and history.
NicHo as Jones, Professor of English
Nicholas Jones began teaching literature at Oberlin in 1976. He holds a BA from Harvard College and an
MA and PhD from Harvard University. He taught literature not just because he loves what words can do,
but also because it is at the center of so many human concerns. At Oberlin, he appreciated the wonderful
mix of the Oberlin classroom: great texts; enriching contexts of history, art, and music; and above all, the
creative engagement of inventive students. Jones currently is working on a book about the connections
individuals make between poems and paintings; he’s using in his study three paintings from Oberlin’s
Allen Memorial Art Museum and one from the Cleveland Museum of Art. He is also in the process of
translating the work of Giovanni Battista Guarini, a 16th-century Italian poet who supplied the lyrics for
many of Monteverdi's great madrigals.
RONALD Kaun, Erwin N. Griswold Professor of Politics
A specialist in constitutional law, legal theory, and American political development, Ronald Kahn holds
a BA from Rutgers University and an MA and PhD from the University of Chicago. He came to Oberlin
in 1969 to teach courses on political change in America and urban politics. After serving as a Fellow
in Law and Government at Harvard from 1979 to 1980, Kahn centered his teaching and research on
American constitutional law. He has published several books and numerous articles about the Supreme
Court, constitutional law and theory, and American political development. Kahn received a Distinguished
Teaching Award from Oberlin in 2001 and from the Law and Courts Division of the American Political
Science Association in 2006. At Oberlin, he established the law and society major and the Oberlin Law
Scholars Program, designed to help students prepare for a career in the legal field. With Eve Sandburg,
Kahn established and taught in the Oberlin Initiative in Electoral Politics, a nonpartisan program that
encourages Oberlin graduates to run for and serve in public office.
HrrscuEL Kasper, Professor of Economics
Hirschel Kasper earned his BA at Boston University in 1956 and MA and PhD in economics at the
University of Minnesota in 1959 and 1963, respectively. He came to Oberlin in 1963, where he taught
courses in labor economics, labor-management relations, and poverty and affluence. Kasper has written
on topics such as unemployment and labor market problems and policies, both in the United States and
Scotland. His primary research interests lie within labor economics and public policy. Kasper’s interest
in college education led to his 1991 article, “The Education of Economists,” published in the American
Economic Association's Journal of Economic Literature. Kasper also served for more than two decades as
an associate editor of the Journal of Economic Education. He is professionally known for his research on job
search by the unemployed and collective bargaining in public and private education. His interests in labor
market conditions and human capital include problems of poverty and welfare. On occasion he serves as a
neutral labor arbitrator on disputes in the public and private sectors.
CaRTER McApaMs, Professor of Dance
Carter McAdams studied dance at Princeton University from Ze’eva Cohen and joined the Fairmount
Dance Theater in Cleveland in 1973. He taught Bill Evans’ technique and repertory in Boston and Seattle
and was a member of both the Elizabeth Keen Dance Company and the Beverly Brown Dancensemble
in New York City. He toured internationally with the Nikolais Dance Theatre from 1978 to 1982. He and
Nusha Martynuk codirected their company, Partners: Martynuk/McAdams Dance, and were awarded an
NEA Choreographic Fellowship. McAdams and Martynuk taught at Trinity College in Hartford before
coming to Oberlin in 1988. They each guest performed with and choreographed for The Repertory Project
in Cleveland in the 1990s and were in the Ohio Arts Council’s Arts-in-Education Program. McAdams
and Martynuk’s dance video Apparitions (2009) toured Japan as part of the DMJ International Festival.
In his 29 years at Oberlin, McAdams worked with many Conservatory of Music colleagues, notably Tom
Lopez, Peter Swendsen, and Tim Weiss. Whenever McAdams taught his first-year seminar The Crusade
Against Evolution, the dean and colleagues in the biology, geology, politics, and religion departments were
wonderfully supportive.
Paula RICHMAN ’74, Emeritus William H. Danforth Professor of South Asian Religions
Paula Richman graduated from Oberlin in 1974 before going on to earn three advanced degrees, the first at
Princeton in 1977 and the second and third at the University of Chicago in 1980 and 1983. She joined the
Oberlin faculty in 1985, specializing in the study of the Ramayana, a Hindu epic, and Tamil, a language
spoken in south India and abroad by more than 75 million people. In addition to publishing two books
on Tamil poetry, she completed a book on 20th-century retellings of the Ramayana in Tamil. Richman is
most widely known in India for three edited volumes: Many Ramayanas, Questioning Ramayanas, and
Ramayana Stories in Modern South Asia. She received a Guggenheim Fellowship and several grants from
the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Institute of India Studies.
DeEBoRAH RooskE, Professor of Education
Deborah Roose taught preschool and elementary school before earning her doctorate at the University of
Massachusetts, Amherst. After directing education studies programs at Guilford College in Greensboro,
North Carolina, and Albion College in Albion, Michigan, she came to Oberlin to lead the Graduate
Teacher Education Program. During the last five years, she taught undergraduate courses centered
on alternative pedagogy and children and society, helped create the undergraduate Education Studies
Committee and its program concentration, and worked with the Environmental Studies Program. Roose's
scholarship and national service focused on social justice, innovation, and quality in teacher education
programs in liberal arts higher education institutions. Her national professional service included chairing
the Model of Excellence Committee for the Association of Independent Liberal Arts Colleges for Teacher
Education and serving on the advisory committee of the Asian Educational Resource Center of the Asia
Society in New York City.

GEORGE SAKAKEENY, Professor of Bassoon
George Sakakeeny started his teaching career at Oberlin in 1989. He has appeared as a soloist with
orchestras throughout North and South America, Europe, and the Far East, including engagements in
Vienna, Paris, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, and with the Cleveland Orchestra. Sakakeeny also served as visiting
professor for graduate studies at Simon Bolivar University and for El Sistema in Caracas, Venezuela, as
well as guest professor at the Central Conservatory of Music of Beijing. Three major works for bassoon
have been written for him: Libby Larsen’s full moon in the city, Peter Schickele’s Concerto for Bassoon and
Orchestra, and Alexander Blechinger’s Fagottkonzert. Many of his former students hold principal positions
in orchestras, teach in music schools, perform as soloists, and are members of internationally known
chamber ensembles. Sakakeeny can be heard in numerous recordings, most notably his recording of the
Villa-Lobos Duo, A. 535, with oboist Alex Klein, and his recent recording of four modern concerti for
bassoon titled full moon in the city, which was recorded on the Oberlin Music label.
BRUCE SIMONSON, Professor of Geology
Bruce Simonson, a sedimentary geologist by training, earned a BA at Wesleyan University in 1972 and
a PhD at Johns Hopkins University in 1982 after two years of fieldwork in Central America. He began
teaching at Oberlin in 1979, teaching numerous courses on topics ranging from aquifers to asteroids. His
main research focused on strata deposited in the earth’s earliest oceans. This topic involved extensive
fieldwork in Labrador, the Lake Superior region, Western Australia, and South Africa—research made
possible by grants from Oberlin, the National Science Foundation, National Geographic, NASA, and other
agencies. Oberlin students were active in most of these projects as co-investigators and coauthors. Based on
this work, Simonson published 40 peer-reviewed papers in various professional journals and coauthored a
book, Distal Impact Ejecta Layers: A Record of Large Impacts in Sedimentary Deposits (2013).
II | CANDIDATES FOR THE AWARD FOR DISTINGUISHED
SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY
BENJAMIN K. EzINGA ’01, JosHUA A. ROSEN ’01, NAomMiI M. SABEL’02
Upon graduation, this trio of young alumni formed Sustainable Community Associates, a community
development firm devoted to invigorating main streets and urban neighborhoods in a socially
responsible and sustainable way. Defying the “failure to launch” moniker, they chose an abandoned
site in downtown Oberlin as their first endeavor, and the results of East College Street are tangible.
Today, the development hosts new businesses and mixed-income housing, providing an expanded tax
base and increased opportunities for Oberlin residents.
In addition to ensuring that the city of Oberlin continues to realize its potential, SCA is advancing
its work within Northeast Ohio with an eye toward the needs of Cleveland’s neighborhoods, turning
historic and vacant buildings into neighborhood assets. To date, SCA has facilitated the investment
of more than $60 million into low-income neighborhoods and earned a deserved reputation for
successfully taking on intricate challenges that have stymied other developers. When people ask why
they choose such difficult projects, Ezinga, Rosen, and Sabel point to their Oberlin experiences and
the influence their liberal arts education has had on their problem-solving skills, value systems, and
sense of social justice.
III! HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENTS
ROSEMARY AHTUANGARUAK, Doctor of Humanities
Rosemary Ahtuangaruak is the environmental manager for the Alaska Native Village of Nuiqsut. A
mother and grandmother, she has been a community health aide/physician assistant, an emergency
responder, a tribal and city council member, a participant with the National Tribal Think Tank with the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Public Health Association, a member
of the North Slope Regional Advisory Council of the Federal Subsistence Board, and a member of the
working group of the RISING SUN Arctic Council study of suicide prevention.
Lonnie G. Buncu III, Doctor of Humanities
Lonnie Bunch, an educator and historian, is the founding director of the Smithsonian's Museum of
African American History and Culture. He served as president of the Chicago Historical Society from
2001 to 2005 and held several positions at the Smithsonian, including associate director for curatorial
affairs and supervising curator at the National Museum of American History.
Bunch is author of the award-winning book, Call the Lost Dream Back: Essays on Race, History and
Museums (2010), as well as Slave Culture: A Documentary Collection of the Slave Narratives (2014) and
Memories of the Enslaved: Voices from the Slave Narratives (2015). Since 2008, he has been series coeditor
of the New Public Scholarship Edition of the University of Michigan Press.
Bunch has served on the advisory boards of the American Association of Museums, the African
American Association of Museums, the American Association of State and Local History, and the U.S.
National Committee of the International Council of Museums. His awards and recognitions include
appointment to the Commission for the Preservation of the White House by President George W. Bush

in 2002 and by President Barack Obama in 2009. In 2005, the American Association of Museums named
Bunch one of the 100 most influential museum professionals in the 20th century. This year, he received the
President’s Award at the NAACP Image Awards.
Eppik Danreg;s, Doctor of Music
Eddie Daniels is that rarest of musicians who is not only equally at home in both jazz and classical
music, but excels at both with breathtaking virtuosity. A true renaissance musician, Daniels is the
recipient of unreserved accolades from his peers, from critics, and from the public. Expert testimony
from the jazz world includes the eminent critic Leonard Feather, who said of Daniels: “It is a rare event
in jazz where one man can all but reinvent an instrument, bringing it to a new stage of evolution.”
Daniels first came to the attention of jazz audiences as a tenor saxophonist with the Thad Jones/Mel
Lewis Orchestra. When Jones and Lewis first organized their band in 1966 to play Monday nights at
the Village Vanguard in New York—where it still plays today—Daniels was one of the first musicians
they called. Later that year, Daniels entered the International Competition for Modern Jazz, a contest
organized by the pianist Fredrich Gulda and sponsored by the city of Vienna; he played the saxophone
and won first prize. Daniels continued working with Jones and Lewis over the next several years and
toured Europe extensively with them.
A single clarinet solo recorded on the orchestra’s 1967 album Live at the Village Vanguard garnered
sufficient attention for Daniels to win Downbeat Magazine’s International Critics New Star on Clarinet
Award. His conversion to clarinet was nothing new: Daniels began on the instrument at age 13 and
received his master’s degree in clarinet from the Juilliard School. He has since revolutionized the blend
of jazz and classical and won numerous Grammy Awards and nominations over his career.
Daniels’ prolific recording career spans more than 90 recordings. In January 2014, Daniels won the
Grand Prix de LAcademie du Jazz for the Best Jazz Album of the Year for Duke at the Roadhouse,
his CD with pianist Roger Kellaway. Daniel Schnyder’s Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra, MATRIX 21,
was composed for and dedicated to Daniels. Commissioned by the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra
(Switzerland), Daniels performed its world premiere in January 2010. In September 2015, Daniels
performed his version of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, titled The Five Seasons, at the Detroit Jazz Festival
with members of the Detroit Symphony, and in November he premiered composer Charles Fox’s
“Quintet for Clarinet” with the Harlem String Quartet.
Daniels’ overriding ambition is to reach as many people as possible with his music, to enlarge the
audience for both jazz and classical music, and to tear down the walls separating them. In Daniels’
hands, the music of Mozart can be as engaging as that of Charlie Parker—and a concert featuring both
can be a uniquely rewarding experience for the audience.
DARREN WALKER, Doctor of Humanities
Darren Walker is president of the Ford Foundation, the nation’s second-largest philanthropy, and for
two decades has been a leader in the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors. He led the philanthropy
committee that helped bring a resolution to the city of Detroit’s historic bankruptcy, and he chairs
the U.S. Impact Investing Alliance. Prior to joining Ford, Walker was vice president at the Rockefeller
Foundation, where he managed the Rebuild New Orleans initiative after Hurricane Katrina. In the
1990s, as COO of Harlem’s largest community development organization, the Abyssinian Development
Corporation, he oversaw a comprehensive revitalization program of central Harlem, including more
than 1,000 new units of housing. He had a decade-long career in international law and finance at Cleary
Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton and UBS. He is a member of the Commission on the Future of Riker’s Island
and serves on the boards of Carnegie Hall, New York City Ballet, the High Line, the Arcus Foundation,
and PepsiCo.
Educated exclusively in public schools, Walker received his alma mater’s highest honor, the
Distinguished Alumnus Award, from the University of Texas at Austin. In 2016, TIME magazine named
him to its annual list of the “100 Most Influential People in the World.” He is a member of the Council
on Foreign Relations, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the recipient of 10 honorary
degrees and university awards.
BRENDA Way, Doctor of Fine Arts
Brenda Way is the founder and artistic director of ODC/Dance (formerly Oberlin Dance Collective)
and the creator of the ODC Theater and ODC Dance Commons, community performance and training
venues in San Francisco's Mission District. She received her early training at the School of American
Ballet and Ballet Arts in New York, and, while a faculty member at Oberlin in the 1970s, launched the
Oberlin Dance Collective as a professional company that contributed to the creation of an inter-arts
department involving faculty from both the college and conservatory. She moved to the Bay Area in 1976.
Throughout the past 45 years, ODC has evolved into a national center for contemporary dance and
performance. Its two-building creative campus is home to an internationally known dance company
(ODC/Dance), a theater with year-round presentations and mentorship programs (ODC Theater), a
training school for dancers and movers of all levels (ODC School), a Pilates studio, and a fully subsidized
Healthy Dancers’ Clinic. The ODC campus currently serves 15,000 students each year in a variety of dance
disciplines and presents some 80 performances annually of regional, national, and international talent.
Way has choreographed more than 90 pieces during the past 46 years. Recent major commissions include
Unintended Consequences: A Meditation (2008), Equal Justice Society; Life is a House (2008), San Francisco
Girls Chorus; On a Train Heading South (2005), CSU Monterey Bay; and Remnants of Song (2002), Stanford
Living Arts.
Her work Investigating Grace was named a National Endowment for the Arts American Masterpiece in
2011. Her work was also selected by the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2010 to tour Southeast Asia as
one of four American companies to represent the U.S. in the State Department’s inaugural DanceMotion
cultural exchange program. Her numerous honors include Isadora Duncan Dance Awards for both
choreography and sustained achievement and 40 years of support from the National Endowment for
the Arts. She is a 2000 recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship. In 2009, she was the first
choreographer to be a resident of the arts at the American Academy in Rome, and in 2012, she received
the Helen Crocker Russell Award for Community Leadership from the San Francisco Foundation. Way
holds a PhD in aesthetics from Union Graduate School and is the mother of four children.
